Advanced Compiler Design UCSD CSE231

cse231 - advanced compiler design

Let’s assume we choose the first option, and consider the code we mightgenerate for a method call like l.sum(). You will get an invite to in the first few days of the quarter. If you needanything in the meantime or can’t find your invite, you can email Joe

PROJECTS

cse231 - advanced compiler design

Then, you will have significant choice inthe project you decide to work on, though generally we expect that projectswill be extensions of the running compiler we develop in the first part ofthe course. Group work will be allowed (optionally) on the projects, withdetails to come. Alfred Barcarse brings over 40 years of graphic design experience to AS Design. Starting in publication & advertising design in the ‘80s, he spent over 20 years specializing in movie advertising design and prepress, working on projects for Disney International, New Line Cinema, Fine Line Features, IMAX, Showtime Video, and many others. And, if you love wine, Fred often shares his wine discoveries on Delectable.

Lecture Times and Location

Creatingreferences for variables makes yet more work at runtime, in the form ofallocations and memory access, which is less efficient than stack accessalone. An optimizing compiler for Python ought to do the analysis described above, and choose which one of the compilation strategies to use based on thecomplexity of the nested functions. The questions of when to inline, and inhow many cases we can avoid wrapping variables in references, become new, fruitful areas of measurement and exploration for the compiler author.

All Students by Gender23

Acritical decision we had to make for Link is making sure that sum camebefore new, because any List-typed object that is used to call sumneeds to use the same index for that method. Running the type-checker would leave us with an expression decorated with thereturn type (in this case ), and with the obj field decorated withthe object’s class type. These first three assignments are designed to get us all to a basic level offunctionality and understanding.

Students are required to extend a context-free language and design and implement a lexer and bottom-up (SLR) parser for the language in the first programming project. In the second project, students are required to extend a context-free language and design and implement a compiler using compiler construction tools such as Bison and Yacc. Midterm test has five questions, and the final examination has nine questions. I track the performance of the students on each homework assignment, each programming project assignment, and each question on the midterm and final examination.

CSE 231: Advanced Compilers

cse231 - advanced compiler design

This requires implementing a new algorithm in our compiler that calculatesthe set of nonlocal variables in a function definition. The calculation ofthis set of variables is similar to the kinds of calculations we have to doto build environments for our functions or look for undefined identifiers, but with the goal of finding names that need this extra-argument treatment. This puts a new demand on our compiler – some time before generating code, weneed to build the mapping from each class to a starting index and from eachclass-method pair to an offset. This will allow us to create this table andreference it correctly from generated code.

However, due to recursion, it is not ageneral solution, and due to code size concerns, it is not a pragmaticsolution for all cases. If we were compiling to traditional assembly, we could have the stack framefor g refer to the stack frame for f, since all stack memory in atraditional process is part of the same address space. We could compile gto do a specific memory-offset lookup for x in order to find it in itscaller’s frame, which is reminiscent the infrastructure for getting theaddress of variables in C/C++ (the & operator). These use cases help us understand some of the necessary information we needto track across REPL entries, and for separate compilation of programs thatuse classes in general. It is now our task to figure outhow to represent this in our compiler and at runtime. A single call expression in the source program may select from one ofseveral method definitions at runtime.

Ability to use Flex or similar tools to create a lexical analyzer and Yacc/Bison tools to create a parser. The third programming assignment must be completed and submittedentirely on your own. This is one of the major assessments for the course, and you should treat it like a take-home exam. And, what design studio would be complete without a resident feline?

Aside from modifying theREPL/runner to consume and produce this new information there’s no newinfrastructure required. The WASM tool is tables and the call_indirectinstruction,which allow us to refer to a function by a numeric (i32) index into a tablerather than by a name that needs to be known at compile-time. WASM currentlysupports a single table per module, so we will need to organize all methodreferences within the same module-level table.

Our rescue cat, Snoop, brings just the right level of mayhem to our lives. ArtCenter is a private nonprofit fully accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Renowned for both its ties to industry and social impact initiatives, the College is the first design school to receive the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status. Ability to implement a lexer without using Flex or any other lexer generation tools.

At the same time, you will get a feeling for what research is like in the area of program analysis and compilers by reading research papers, and getting your feet wet in a small project. If you haven't picked an area of research to work in, being exposed to some research will help you make a better decision. If you have already picked an area of research to work in, seeing what research is like in other fields of CS will broaden your perspective. Weekly lectures will be a mix of practical tutorials on necessary tools andtechniques, discussions of compilers concepts that we can apply to ourprojects, and review of solutions generated by the class. Ability to design a compiler for a concise programming language.

It turns outthat these concepts are quite interesting and provide a useful introductionto more sophisticated uses of functions, so we will discuss them here. This was completely sufficient infrastructure for implementing objectconstruction and field access. We left the (I claim trivial) additions offield update and initialization as exercises to the reader. Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education. With a current enrollment of approximately 2,423 students (57% female and 43% male, representing more than 50 countries), the College has a student/faculty ratio of 8 to 1. A key consequence of dynamic dispatch is that object values must containinformation about their class, because the class of an object cannot bedetermined statically.

We will also assign weekly readings from around the Web highlighting toolsand techniques we need, and research papers that explore the space ofcompiler design. This project will allow us to explore a number of interesting features ofcompilation and build deployable, user-facing programming environments. The main course project is building an in-browser, interactive compiler from(typed) Python programs to WebAssembly.

This gives us some constraints that allow usmore freedom with compilation than we have with other functions. Inparticular, we know g cannot be exported and called from another REPLentry, so if we wanted to, say, change its signature to add or removearguments, we could also find all of the places that call g and update themappropriately. And in fact, Python with nonlocal declarations is closer to theinteresting-case behavior of most programming languages – multiple functionscan perform updates on, and see the value of, a shared variable. Advanced material in programming languages and translator systems. Adding inheritance now means that we need to track the table layout of theclass environment across REPL entries as well, and each new REPL module needsaccess to a running table of function references.

Boat Cruises on the Riverwalk from Go Rio Cruises

san antonio river walk cruise

San Antonio has a great many attractions, from the famous Alamo to the Six Flags theme park just outside the city. They also do a line of tequila infused dishes if you’re feeling adventurous, as well as a range of cocktails. The food here is award winning with a wide range of Mexican dishes to choose from. For our guide to the riverwalk, we wanted to share some good options that are either on, or very close to, the San Antonio River Walk. Whilst the river taxi and river barges are a popular way to get around the downtown and Museum section of the riverwalk, they don’t go everywhere. Just be aware that it is quite a long walk from the downtown section of the River Walk.

River Walk Hotels with Poolside Relaxation

Just like a well-aged whiskey, the top San Antonio River Walk cruises are smooth, rich, and unforgettable. When you think of Texas, images of mouthwatering BBQ, cowboy hats, and tumbleweeds may come to mind. However, if you find yourself in the enchanting city of San Antonio, there’s no better journey out there than through the vibrant heart of the River Walk. May 2017, GO RIO was awarded a 10-year contract with the City of San Antonio to operate the river cruises. The main thing that makes the San Antonio Riverwalk special is its combination of natural beauty and bustling city life. You can experience both at any time of day or night and get a sense of why San Antonio is so beloved by locals and tourists alike.

Restaurants on the San Antonio Riverwalk

Instead, we would suggest either cycling, taking the bus, or doing a guided tour with transport like this. Designed as part of the original riverwalk by architect Robert Hugman, the theater is split across the river, with the stage on the north side and the 800 person seating area on the south side. Attractions in the area include the Witte Museum, the San Antonio Zoo, the DOSeum, San Antonio Museum of Art and Pearl Brewery. This river walk runs through Brackenridge Park, which is also home to a Golf Course and Japanese Tea Garden.

Visit the Missions

As you sail through, you’ll be thrown into San Antonio’s rich culture, history, and amazing architecture. Enjoy drinks, light bites, and breathtaking views as you cruise down the iconic River Walk. Hosted by Zocca Cuisine D’Italia at The Westin Riverwalk, and guided tour led by our amazing boat captains. When it comes to finding the best part of the San Antonio Riverwalk, everyone has their own opinion! If you’re looking for a great way to spend your day in San Antonio, then why not try out a River Walk boat tour? Taking a leisurely cruise along the San Antonio Riverwalk is one of the most popular activities in the city, offering spectacular views and plenty of entertainment.

In 2011, the San Antonio River Walk was extended again, this time to the south of the city where you will find the San Antonio’s Missions National Historical Park. When it was built, the Aztec theater was designed to be highly decorated and opulent. As the name suggests, the style focuses on Aztec design, with columns, artwork, murals and sculpture working together to give a feel for ancient Mexican temples. There’s also outdoor seating around the lagoon area and even hotels available – see our guide to where to stay on the River Walk below for more information on these. One of the most popular ways to experience the River Walk is to take a ride on one of the various River Walk barges. Many of the restaurants on the River Walk allow dogs on their patios, but do always check to be sure.

Visitor Information

There are currently no Riverwalk restaurants that offer reservation based “community” type lunch or dinner cruises where you can join others on a boat for a meal. To book a charter lunch or dinner cruise, you first contact a Riverwalk restaurant and they will assist you in chartering the boat and cater the meal for you. Chartered dinner and lunch cruises seat a maximum of 20 guests but most recommend 16 to 18 people for comfort.

As well as the River Walk, some of our other favourite attractions include the Buckhorn Saloon, San Fernando Cathedral, and the Historic Market Square. Here is a Google Map which shows the general route of the San Antonio riverwalk, which you can also see on Google Maps here. Just a 20 – 30 minute walk south from the downtown loop of the River Walk is the King William Historic district. The tour is also available on smartphones—QR codes are available at each stop which you can scan for information on what you are seeing. One thing to be aware of is that in summer San Antonio gets very hot, and there is limited shade along the southern parts of the River Walk. So if you do decide to hire a bike, make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Some of the properties are open for viewing, so you can visit inside them, or you can just enjoy a wander around. We can also recommend visiting the Guenther House, which is both a historic home you can tour, and a cafe/restaurant. The San Antonio River Walk was extended in 2009 to include an area north of the city which is home to a number of museums and other attractions, including the Pearl Brewery. The Shops at Rivercentre is built around an extension of the River Walk, which is known as the Rivercentre lagoon. Start out with an enriching 35-minute River Walk boat cruise, which is honestly one of my favorite things to do every time I’m in this city. After that exhilarating experience, head down for a relaxing 35-minute River Walk cruise along the fun 15-mile urban waterway.

River Boat Taxis

This two-mile stretch of winding pathways offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore natural scenery while enjoying access to some of the best shopping and dining in the city. The best part of the San Antonio Riverwalk is arguably its lush scenery and vibrant atmosphere. The walkway itself passes by popular sights such as historic buildings and waterfront shopping centers, giving visitors plenty to do. It’s also been featured in several movies and TV shows, making it a memorable destination for many people. GO RIO's 35-minute San Antonio River Walk boat tour connects you to the city's culture, history, architecture, and timeless charm. The water in the river is normally drained for essential maintenance every two years.

The San Antonio River Cruise & Hop-On Hop-Off Tour is ideal if it’s your first time here and really want to get a glimpse into the vibrant culture that keeps it running. All I can say is, prepare to be enchanted by the city’s beauty, its people, and its history. You’ll learn all about our city’s architecture and points of interest.

If you would like more information about a private, chartered dinner, lunch or cocktail cruise, email us here. To dine on a river boat you first contact a Riverwalk restaurant and then they assist you in chartering the boat and cater the event for you. A river boat/barge configured for dining holds a maximum of 20 people, but most recommend 16 to 18 people for comfort. If you have questions about doing a dining or cocktail cruise, just send us an email by clicking here. Boat cruises on the Riverwalk are an amazing way to see the river and downtown San Antonio.

Another popular shopping destination on the River Walk is the La Villita Historic Arts Village. This art community is home to several art galleries, as well as stores selling a variety of items, including souvenirs, customised jewelry, pottery and regional folk art. There are public restrooms at some locations along the river walk, such as in the Rivercenter Mall. There are also restrooms at the various bars and hotels along the River Walk.

Although the water is relatively shallow and safe, it is full of plants and debris which can make swimming dangerous. Additionally, many of the pathways around the River Walk are filled with people and can be too crowded for swimming.

The restaurants are adorned with wonderfully colourful umbrellas, and there’s a wide range of dining options. This can make picking a spot challenging, so take a look at our section on restaurants along the River Walk further on in the post to help you decide where to eat. One of the highlights along the downtown river walk area are all the places to sit, eat, or drink, and watch the world go by. In the downtown area, you will need to visit the shops or malls, or pop into a restaurant or cafe for water. The River Walk now stretches from the San Antonio mission area, through downtown, and up to the major museums in the city.

Community River Walk Dining Boats

There are a number of shopping locations along the riverwalk, but perhaps the most well-known and largest is the Shops at Rivercentre (formerly known as the Rivercenter Mall). From shopping to entertainment to museums—to just taking a leisurely stroll or boat ride—the River Walk has something for everyone. The River Walk starts around 4 miles north of the city center, where E. Outside of the downtown area, there are also restrooms in some of the parks and missions in the Mission Reach area.

Dinner Cruises

You can see the dates for future maintenance on the river maintenance page of the San Antonio city here. To walk the entire River Walk from one end to the other including the downtown area would likely take five to six hours. The San Antonio River Walk is 15 miles long, with five miles of that flowing through downtown San Antonio. This is one of my favorite combo packages that let you unwind, have some fun, and learn about this magical Texan city. If you really want to get to know San Antonio the way it deserves, you must explore the gem by both land and water.

The first stop is usually The Alamo, which makes sense, considering it’s one of the most important when it comes to Texan history. You’ll pay visits to the historic San Fernando Cathedral, the lively Historic Market Square, and the interesting Blue Star Arts Complex. These are all contained in the beautiful King William Historic District known for the art galleries, Victorian homes, and just a generally pretty environment. Along the way, you’re guide will offer up an educational commentary as well as some interesting anecdotes to spice up the journey. There’s no having to deal with crowds or trying to see over the heads over your group – just a relaxed way to see the city and its stories.

More to Explore on the San Antonio River Walk

If you’re into the arts at all, you’ll love the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts where both local and touring acts put on shows. You’ll then see the Veterans Memorial Park, where both the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials stand, serving as a tribute to these honored heroes. Museum Reach is up next, where you’ll get to soak in the gorgeous landscapes, explore the biking trails, and of course, see some other restaurants.

The Museum Reach begins at Lexington and runs allthe way up to The Pearl. At times larger scooters are not able to load due to the size of the ADA area designated on the boat. Wheelchairs and strollers are always allowed though guests are asked to fold their strollers and place them in the back. GO RIO Cruises offers a unique San Antonio River Walk experience for every occasion. We’ve put together some other content on San Antonio to help plan your trip, and we also have a lot of other posts about the USA. We’ll also be be writing more about Texas, including our visits to Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and Big Bend National Park, so do sign up to keep up to date with our latest posts.
